Portobello, the Irish for “lovely harbor’ is an area of Dublin extending west from South Richmond Street to the Upper Clanbrassil Street verged on the north by the South Circular Road and on the south by the Grand Canal.

Portobello appeared as a little suburb south of the city in the eighteenth century, it was built up over the following century. Transforming farmland and private houses into strong Victorian red-bricked living quarters for the working classes (on the bigger roads), and terraced houses flanking the canal for the average workers.

It is in the postal area of Dublin 8. It is in the neighborhood government discretionary region of Dublin South East Inner City and the Dáil Constituency of Dublin Bay South.
